I know you will think: “what a big mess” but this situation really happened in a big club (used to host the WPT): the “Aviation Club de France” and during the “Grand Prix de Paris” (link here : http://www.aviationclubdefrance.com/home_uk.html).
OK to make it simple: after a Break they close a table … player A (with 25000) find a ticket sending him to a new place with 50000 … A just seats & start playing … he plays 4 hands during wich he eliminate player X (famous) wich had let’s say 40000 … player A have now 90000 … then player B is coming back (late but it’s his right) from the break and claim for this seat (in fact the organisators really made a mistake with the ticket of A: he should never have been moved to this 50000 place wich really was the place of B) … the three players (together with X) call for the floor (poor man lol) … after half an hour of decisions: PLAYER X IS DECLARED ELIMINATED (I agree) - PLAYERS A&B ARE SENT TO THEIR ORIGINAL SEATS (25000 & 50000) but on TV nobody understood what became the 40000 of benefits … we understood it was divided between A & B (???) … On my opinion: I WOULD HAVE RETIRED THE 40000 FROM THE TOURNAMENT (X would be eliminated but A could’nt get profit from a move made with another one’s stack!)!
Any idea?

Hello,
I must tell you I have a lot of success right now in France with blind structures WITHOUT ANTE! For example I’m right now preparing a 300 euros tournament structure for a big casino with blinds but no ante.
The reasons not to use ante:
1- It does not slow down the action or the tournament duration because I use the famous 5% rule to anticipate the end (when the BB is 5% of the total chip stack!). For example: my next tourney will be a freezout of 200 players with 1000 points so I KNOW the end will be very close to the blind round 5000-10000 (or mostly exactly there)!
2- It lighten the work of the floor & dealers because the chip-races (colors-up) can be done sooner (with antes you need the little denominations more late to pay the antes). So the total mass of chips is lighter, making the movements more easy and the reading of the stacks more easy for everybody (players & dealers).
3- it lighten the work of the dealers and the risks of errors at the initial bet because the control of the blinds is more easy!
4- it makes the tournament more popular to the players because they feel like they have less pressure (while you still control the end of the tournament with the 5% technic!).
Best regards,
GG

Having never played in a live casino tournament (only online and home games) I’m confused about the procedure for a chip race. Roberts Rules must be leading something out on their explanation because it sounds like you’re dealing cards to people for no reason. It says “8. The lowest denomination of chip in play will be removed from the table when it is no longer needed in the blind or ante structure. All lower-denomination chips that are of sufficient quantity for a new chip will be changed up directly. The method for removal of odd chips is to deal one card to a player for each odd chip possessed. Cards are dealt clockwise starting with the 1-seat, with each player receiving all cards before any cards are dealt to the next player. The player with the highest card by suit gets enough odd chips to exchange for one new chip, the second-highest card gets to exchange for the next chip, and so forth, until all the lower-denomination chips are exchanged.” It seems to me you’re just rounding up everyone’s chips. How do you lose a chip race? It explains what to do to prevent a player from being “raced out” but I don’t see how you ever get there. What am I missing? [Please note this question was originally submitted by someone other than Chicago Mike. it’s just attributed to CM during blog setup]
